Sal and Maign trekked through the woodland for many days and were just starting to cross the north-eastern border of what would later be known as Italy. All the while, Sal hid his secret from Maign and at any opportunity, he gave into his dark cravings.
Then one day close to sunset, they came across a small settlement and at the centre of the settlement was a fire. Sal and Maign hid behind a large tree and observed the people. The people were very similar to the person Sal had previously encounteredâthe one he had killed. They were shorter than his people, but were more muscled and their heads were slightly larger. They seemed to speak with a deep guttural voice, but the language wasn't as developed as his.
âWhat do you think? Should we go in?â Maign whispered.
âI think we will stay away until night fall. Then I will go in alone and take a look,â Sal replied. Maign nodded. She didn't particularly want to be in another fight any time soon. They backed away from the settlement and found a comfortable spot to spend the rest of the day in.
Night closed in. Sal stood behind the same tree. âYou know ⦠if animal blood makes you stronger than most men, just imagine what human blood could do for you,â the voice suggested. As he watched the sleeping people, a crazed fire came into Sal's eyes and a lust for blood to his throat. The fire had died down and was now just hot embers glowing red in the dark. With his good eyesight, Sal didn't have any trouble navigating around the settlement. People slept on and under skins to protect them from the environment.
It should not be too difficult, he thought, but I might start with a child for my first attempt. He spotted a young boy-child only a few paces from where he stood. He stalked the sleeping child noiselessly. When he reached the child, he quickly placed his right hand over the child's mouth and with his left lifted the child from the ground. With the child kicking and scrabbling for freedom, Sal carried him off into the forest. When Sal was out of earshot of the settlement, he crouched on the ground and quickly broke the child's neck. Sal tore open the vein in the neck and drank the young blood. When he had finished, he left the body where it was and returned to Maign, wiping his mouth of any blood. While he was walking back to his lover, a wild sense of excitement came over him.
His senses grew sharper, but his thoughts grew disjointed. He experienced a euphoria he had never felt before, as if he was the beginning and end of everything, like he was the Master of Men. Amongst the many disjointed thoughts running through Sal's head, two stood out the most. The first was the love and desire he felt for Maign, for his love had just grown two-fold. He
